Couples Psychotherapy

Couples seek therapy for a variety of reasons.  Some do so preemptively to ward off potential problems.  Some see their relationship has deteriorated and they cannot find a way to regain what they once had.  Some are on the verge of separation or divorce.  Discovery of an affair can create a crisis. Health or family stressors can overwhelm the couple's capacity to cope constructively.

Psychodynamic couples therapy is an exploratory kind of therapy.

Adults carry within themselves the lessons and feelings from a lifetime of experiences.  Some of these are obvious, and some are located outside of one’s awareness.  All these experiences and feelings can potentially affect the situation which brings a couple to therapy.

This therapy will offer an opportunity to gain a fuller perspective on the couple’s situation.  It will address problematic interactions, stressors, disappointments, misunderstandings, and so forth.  It is designed to increase both persons’ capacities to reflect on their situation and on the options available to them. At times it can help resolve difficult couple impasses.

Concerns about intimacy and sexual connection can have psychodynamic underpinnings and may also be explored in this therapy.
